What Actually Happens to Saves When You Delete

When you delete a Reddit account, the saved posts list attached to it becomes permanently inaccessible. The posts themselves stay on Reddit (they belong to their authors), but your curated list of them — years of bookmarked guides, expert threads, and reference material — is gone with the account, and there is no recovery path afterward. Reddit gives you no warning about this during deletion and no built-in way to take your saves with you. That is why the backup has to happen before you delete, while the account can still be read. Done in the right order, keeping everything takes about ten minutes.

The Pre-Deletion Backup Checklist

Install Readdit Later and Connect Your Account

Install the extension from the Chrome Web Store (https://chromewebstore.google.com/detail/jdceogapnjfcfdklbpnllbmnjbfmfejk) on Chrome, Brave, Edge, or Arc, and connect the Reddit account you plan to delete via its official OAuth flow. Your saved posts and saved comments sync in, with full text content — not just links.

Capture Saves Beyond the 1,000 Limit

Reddit's API only lists your most recent 1,000 saved items, so a long-lived account almost certainly has older saves hiding past that window. Open your saved posts page on reddit.com with the extension installed — Readdit Later's saved-page capture reads posts directly from Reddit's own interface and can often recover older saves the API no longer lists.

Export Your Entire Library

Open the Export panel and download a full backup. CSV, JSON, and HTML are included with Pro; the Lifetime plan adds Markdown (Obsidian-ready), Notion, Readwise, and Pocket/Instapaper formats. For a deletion backup, export at least two formats — for example CSV (structured, spreadsheet-ready) plus HTML (human-readable, opens in any browser forever).

Open the exported files and check them: post titles, full text bodies, subreddits, dates, and permalinks should all be there. This is the step people skip and regret — confirm your archive is complete while the account still exists and a re-export is still possible.

Optional: Request Your Official Reddit Data

For completeness, submit a Reddit data request (GDPR/CCPA) from your account settings before deletion. Be aware of what it contains: bare post IDs and permalinks only — no titles, no content. It is a useful index for cross-checking, not a real backup. The content itself is what your Readdit Later export preserves.

Delete Your Account

With your exports verified, go to Reddit's settings and delete the account. Your saved posts list on Reddit disappears with it — but every post you saved now lives in files you own, in formats that will open anywhere, forever.
